EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR? Maybe you’ve seen it in the news or maybe you’ve heard about it from a friend. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is a treatment that has shown much success with overcoming trauma and reducing negative thought patterns. EMDR involves bilateral stimulation to activate both sides of the brain so that the brain can move through the desensitization process and replace the traumatic memories or negative thoughts with healthier, more adaptive beliefs. It works much like REM sleep which is when your brain processes the information it has received throughout the day and decides what is important to store and what should be discarded. Sometimes when we have experienced trauma or have negative thought patterns, our brain gets stuck and those events or thoughts replay over and over and they affect our behaviors and in turn cause us continual stress. EMDR therapy differs from many traditional trauma therapies in that the details of the trauma do not have to be verbalized which, for some, can be retraumatizing. Any time you are working through trauma, however, a safe and supportive environment is essential.
