DeTUR Therapy for Urges and Addiction, Online
Work on the triggers behind the urge, not just your willpower.
Is this you?
You've quit before, and the urge keeps finding its way back
Certain times, places or feelings set it off every time
It's not only substances: gambling, porn, shopping, gaming, scrolling, food
You want a plan built around the life you want, not only what you're giving up
What is DeTUR?
DeTUR (Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing) is an EMDR-based approach developed by Dr. A.J. Popky. Instead of targeting painful memories, it targets the triggers that set off an urge, like a stressful day, a certain place or a lonely evening.
It starts with a clear picture of how you want your life to look when you're doing well. Each trigger is then brought up in session and processed with bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping), with the goal of turning down the pull it has on you. When trauma sits underneath the urge, DeTUR can be combined with standard EMDR.
Is DeTUR right for me?
DeTUR is outpatient therapy. If you're physically dependent on alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids, stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so please talk with a doctor about safe withdrawal first. We're glad to coordinate with your medical providers. If you're in crisis, call or text 988.

I work with people who feel stuck: in an urge they can't shake, a loop of intrusive thoughts, or the aftereffects of trauma. With DeTUR and EMDR, we focus on what sets the urge off and on the life you're working toward, not on shame or willpower. I also treat OCD and anxiety with ERP.
Day, evening and weekend openings.
Cost
Sessions are 50 minutes, $150. We're in network with Aetna, First Health and Imagine360, and offer courtesy billing for most PPO plans. HSA cards accepted.
FAQ
Do I have to be sober to start?
You don’t need to have quit before you start. Many people begin DeTUR while they’re still working on cutting back. You do need to come to each session not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, so you’re able to fully take part in the work. We’ll set goals together that fit where you are right now.
Is this a replacement for AA, rehab or medication?
No. DeTUR works alongside other support, including 12-step groups, outpatient programs and medication from your doctor.
Does DeTUR work online?
Yes. Bilateral stimulation can be done on screen or with self-tapping, so sessions work well by telehealth.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how many triggers we're working with. We'll check in on progress together as we go.

Resilience is not the ability to stay out of the darkness, it is the ability to sit present in the darkness knowing the light will shine again.
